Custom Jewelry Design Process: From Sketch to Finished Piece

Custom jewelry design is a collaborative process that transforms your vision into a tangible piece. Whether you're designing an engagement ring, a family heirloom, or a unique statement piece, understanding the process helps you make better decisions and set realistic expectations.

This guide walks through every step of our custom jewelry design workflow - from initial consultation to final casting - so you know exactly what happens at each stage.

Step 1: Consultation & Brief

The process starts with understanding your vision. We'll discuss:

  • Design idea: Do you have a sketch, reference photos, or just a concept?
  • Stones: What gemstones do you want? Do you have them or need help sourcing?
  • Metal: Yellow gold, white gold, platinum, rose gold?
  • Timeline: When do you need the finished piece?
  • Budget: What's your target price range?

We'll also show you examples of similar work and discuss design feasibility. Some ideas are straightforward; others need adjustments for manufacturability or structural integrity.

The consultation is where we catch problems early. A design that looks great on paper might not cast well, or might require expensive rework. We'd rather adjust the design now than discover issues during manufacturing.

Step 2: CAD Modeling

Once we have the brief, we build the 3D CAD model in Rhinoceros with MatrixGold or ZBrush (depending on the design complexity).

What happens during CAD modeling:

  1. 1.Base geometry: We establish the ring shank, band width, and overall proportions
  2. 2.Stone settings: Prongs, bezels, or pavé seats are modeled with precise dimensions for your stones
  3. 3.Details: Engraving, milgrain, filigree, and texture are added
  4. 4.Technical verification: We check metal thickness, stone fitment, and structural integrity
  5. 5.File preparation: The model is finalized for rendering and manufacturing

This stage typically takes 24–48 hours for simple designs, up to 48–72 hours for highly detailed or complex custom work.

Step 3: 3D Rendering & Approval

We render the CAD model into photorealistic images showing multiple angles, metal colors, and lighting conditions.

You'll receive:

  • 3-5 high-resolution render images
  • Views from front, side, top, and 45-degree angles
  • Different metal color options (if applicable)
  • Close-ups of stone settings and details

This is where you review and request changes. Most clients request 1-2 rounds of revisions - adjusting proportions, modifying details, or changing stone arrangements. Revisions are included in our standard pricing.

Once you approve the renders, we freeze the design and prepare manufacturing files.

Step 4: File Preparation

We export the approved CAD model into manufacturing-ready file formats:

  • STL file: Used by 3D printers to create the wax or resin pattern for casting
  • 3DM file: Rhino's native format, used for any future modifications
  • Technical specification sheet: Documents metal type, stone dimensions, weight estimates, and manufacturing notes

We also provide the render files for your records or marketing use.

Step 5: Manufacturing (Optional)

At this point, you have two options:

  1. 1.Take the files to your own caster: If you work with a manufacturer, they'll use the STL file to 3D print the pattern, then cast in your chosen metal, set stones, and finish the piece.
  2. 2.We handle manufacturing: We can coordinate casting, stone setting, and finishing through our manufacturing partners. This is optional - some clients prefer to use their own production workflow.

Manufacturing timeline is typically 1-2 weeks depending on complexity and stone sourcing.

  • Manufacturing: 1-2 weeks (if handled by us)
